I C E - In Case of Emergency
Apparently this is a standard procedure all paramedics follow at the scene of an accident when they come across your cell phone. ICE — ”In Case of Emergency” We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of the numbers belong to our closest family or friends.
If we were to be involved in an accident or taken ill, the people tending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn’t know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored, but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence the “ICE (In Case of Emergency) campaign.

The concept of “ICE” is catching on quickly. It is a method of contacting during emergency situations. As cell (mobile) phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during an emergency under “ICE” (In Case of Emergency).
The idea was conceived by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scene of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn’t know which number to call. Therefore he thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and Hospital Staff will be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as “ICE”. Hospital Emergency Room Staff need to know what Allergies and/or medicine has been prescribed by a personal doctor. For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!

Let’s spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our mobile phones today! It really could save your life, or put a loved one’s mind at rest. ICE will speak for you when you are not able to. Pass this to all you families and friends.

Thomas Robert Smith passed away unexpectedly on June 26, days after celebrating his 83rd birthday. Tom was a member of the Moose Lodge 1394 for at least two decades, Although health issues kept him from spending much time at the lodge in recent years, he re-mained a loyal member.

Tom was born in Oxnard on June 19,1927 and grew up in Fillmore. He attended Fillmore High School, where he played football and bas-ketball. At an early age, an illness damaged his hearing, which became progressively worse during his life. This dampened his possibilities, but not his spirit.

After graduating from high school in 1945, Tom moved to Ventura, where he worked for the Shell Oil Company for 36 years. He was a field technician and considered dodging rattlesnakes scarier than work-ing 70 feet up on an oil rig. As a fast worker, he became known as the “Fillmore Flash” and the “Scourge of the Sespe.” It took him seven years to achieve what he thought was “not the best-paying job, but the best job.” He retired in 1981 and lived in Ventura for the rest of his life.
Tom was a life long football fan and attended the first Super Bowl in 1967. He was an avid reader of two daily newspapers and every book about World War II. He joined the marines after graduating, but was discharged after three days because of his hearing.

Tom also loved classic movies, and remembered his mom and big sister Marie taking him to movie palaces in Ventura and Los Angeles when he was a child. He enjoyed traveling and visited Europe, Mexico and the Pacific Islands, Including the Republic of Kiribati, where he toured historic WW II battle sites.

Tom had a sharp mind and a soft heart. He loved animals, cats in particular. He wrote amusing, literate letters filled with mordant wit, and loved to tell a story.
Tom was generous, honest and kind. His poor hearing narrowed his world. This, Along with his formidable exterior, was sometimes a bar-rio to more people knowing him as the intelligent and thoughtful person he was.
